The Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs published a report on Air Pollution in Indonesia that lists the most frequently exposed individuals who are at risk of death due to the high levels of pollution in Indonesia. More than half of these exposed individuals are children under the age of five living in rural areas. This is due to the fact that their respiratory systems are not yet fully developed which is not capable of fighting off pollutants as efficiently as adults. Indonesia is ranked number one for pollution among Asian countries with approximately 44% out of 88% having unhealthy air quality according to an index by Greenpeace’s Testing Air Campaign Indonesia has rarely been implementing any air regulations or environmental protection policies. Recently, Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry has been issuing permits for companies that can emit pollutants into the environment. It is argued that this approach isn’t the right way to tackle the issue since these permits will issue tons of pollutant emissions everyday and will still be allowed to operate. Although Indonesia has signed some international commitments such as the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution, the country has been reluctant in doing so domestically. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has been aware of the hazards caused by air pollution and has taken steps to combat this issue. It has also suggested an open discussion about air pollution on a national level to initiate proper management and counter measures. The Indonesian government recently signed the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution in December 2011. The agreement came into effect on January 2012, and Indonesia pledged to reduce fire emissions that cause haze within two years or more. The realization of this pledge is under evaluation, but according to data released by the Financial Times, there was a reduction in smoke haze levels in 2013 which is the first time if such data had been collected for ten years. Tackling air pollution is an urgent and relevant issue as it is a matter of life and death. A clear, strong and immediate action must be taken to diminish the alarming levels of pollutants in the air.As a country that relies heavily on natural resources, Indonesia has been struggling with pollution issues that affect its economic growth as well as the health of its citizens. The impacts linger on a daily basis as it slowly chokes off Indonesian economy and the health of its citizens. Pollution is the enemy of the human race because it contaminates our environment and creates dangerous conditions that can affect health. Pollution is a problem that needs to be addressed urgently. Pollution can be caused by different factors that include fuel combustion, industrial waste, household waste, power generation, agricultural chemicals and pesticides, open burning of waste and many more. Every year billions of dollars are wasted in fighting pollution. There are many known factors that can cause pollution including vehicles, agriculture, industry and vehicles which are mostly caused by the usage of fuel combustion engines. cfa1e77820
